Remembering Memorial Day
There are many Memorial days that I will never be able to recall. Being the oldest daughter of an Air Force Boom Operator I was very familiar with the holiday. I grew up with the possibility of Dad not returning home.... But he always did.
It is not surprising that I fell in love with a guy who was a lot like Dad! I married an Air Force Weapons Specialist.
The holiday always held importance for me but as I grew older I began to look at the holiday as a paid day off and a chance to hit some sales or visit family.
I thought being in a military environment all my life meant I gave more than the average girl as far as devotion and appreciation to our country. I have alway been proud of those who died for our country.
In 1990 my husband was serving in the Air Force. We were stationed at Ramstein AFB, Germany. We had lived in Europe for 6 years by then and had seen many incredible things. We grew to appreciate what it really meant to be an American.
Living abroad without the American lifestyle and luxuries had made our family a lot wiser and more patriotic I think.
In May 1990 we decided to drive to Luxembourg and visit the American Cemetery where W.W.II soldiers were buried.
These pages are a reflection of that day.
It humbles one to see all the rows of white crosses. Our men laid to rest in a foreign land. They never came home.and their families may never have known that their loved ones are resting in a beautiful peaceful place. By Rhonda James ([email protected])
