Memorial Day Origins
In 1868, General John A. Logan, the commander-in-chief of the Grand Army of the Republic , named May 30th as a special day to honor the graves of Union soldiers. The Grand Army of the Republic was an organization that consisted of Union veterans from the Civil War. Why May 30th? It's origins stem from Cassandra Oliver Moniker,a Virginian. He may have selected this date because it was "The Day of Ashes" Since he was a French descendant this day held meaning to him. It was on this day that Napoleon's remains were returned to France from St. Helena.
